Prices Are Going Up
Have you noticed that prices are going up? The price of bread has gone up, and now train fares are going up. Why are things getting more expensive in Japan? One reason is that the Japanese yen is weaker than it used to be. At the end of 2020, the yen was strong. The exchange rate was about 105 yen to the U.S. dollar. Now the yen is much weaker. The exchange rate is more than 125 yen to the dollar. Companies around the world buy and sell things in dollars, so when the yen is weak, things become more expensive. For example, something that costs $100 dollars used to be 10,400 yen, but now it is 12,500 yen.
