My Grandmother Never Stops Learning
My grandmother likes to learn new things. She learned “mizuhiki” and ikebana. She started using a smartphone last year, but she only used it for calling and texting. One day, when I was making pastries with her, I was looking at a recipe on my phone. She was amazed at how easy it was to find recipes on a phone and became more interested in smartphones. At first, she couldn’t use hers well, so she asked me many questions. Now she can use a smartphone better than me. I think it is amazing that she continues to learn at any age. I hope that I can enjoy learning new things like she does.
今週のじゃれマガから上記の文がお手本だと思いました。
彼女はスマホでレシピを探すのが簡単なことに驚きました･･･という主旨の英文ですが、なかなかこのようにhowを使って書ける人は多くないと思います。中学生の作品ですが、大したものですね。
英文は感嘆文を使って「どれほど簡単か･･･」という言い方をしています。
日本語では「簡単なことに/感嘆さに 驚いた」のようにいうのがふつうで、感嘆文的には言わないので、慣れないとこういう表現形式を思いつかないかもしれません。
ひとつ例をひねり出すとすれば、
「母は日本の人たちが親切なことを知っている」
ということを英語にするなら、
①My mother knows that Japanese people are kind.
というより、
②My mother knows how kind Japanese people are.
の方がお薦めです。
①より②の方が気持ちにピタッと来ます。
