Readers’ Corner: The Godfather of Sudoku
Maki Kaji was a university dropout, but he created the modern version of sudoku. Sudoku is a numbers puzzle, and the name means “single number” in Japanese. The game was invented by a Swiss mathematician over 200 years ago. Kaji simplified the puzzles, named them sudoku, and publicized them in his magazine Nikoli. He came up with the name in about 30 seconds because he was in a hurry to get to the horse race track. More than 200 million people in more than 100 countries have tried the puzzles. Kaji never became rich. He said he worked for the love of games, not for the money. He passed away last year at the age of 69.
