増刊号 quite a few
昨日紹介したじゃれマガのなかで大事なことを書洩らしたので、今日再度紙面を割きます。
先週のじゃれセミでも皆さん？？？だったので皆さんとシェアーしましょう。
文中、中ごろに次の文があります。
Quite a few of them are left behind.
a fewは「少しの」だからquite a fewは「ほんの少しの」くらいの意味かと通り過ぎた人がほとんどのようでした。ところが、
quite a fewとは「かなり（多く）の」という意味です。「仕掛けられたワナのかなりの部分が（外れて）放置される」といいたかったのです。
それを汲み取ってもらわないとこの記事の訴えが効かなくなります。
a fewとquite a fewでは意味がまったく違ってしまう・・・なぜそんなややこしいことを・・・と思うかもしれませんが、それが言葉のあやというものですね。

Readers’ Corner: Ghost Fishing
The Jaremaga post about eels the other day reminded me of the word “ghost fishing.” This word may not be known to everyone, but it is actually very important. Fishermen set a lot of traps on the seabed (the bottom of the sea) to catch fish. Quite a few of them are left behind. Those traps keep catching fish one after another, and they last forever because most of them are made of plastic. It is said that there are many traps left behind, especially in the Sea of Japan. They catch as many fish as the fishermen do. Don’t you feel scared?
