Readers’ Corner: Poems in the Papers
I recently read a book by Mr. Grootaers (1911-1999) , a Catholic priest (father) from Belgium who lived in Japan for 50 years. He says, “There is a page of tanka and haiku poems by readers on the Sunday edition of major newspapers in Japan. It is probably only in Japan that poem-writing is popular among people from all levels of society.” As I had taken that kind of page for granted, his remark was eye-opening to me. I now belong to a haiku group which has meetings about 40 minutes’ drive from my house. I recently learned that there is another haiku group in the community center just 5 minutes’ walk from my place. And to my surprise, I’ve found that my next-door neighbor is in charge of the group. It’s a small world, isn’t it?
