Readers’ Corner: The Difference between Obon and Ohigan
Do you know the difference between Obon and Ohigan? Obon is the time when we welcome the spirits of our ancestors to our homes and thank them. It is from August 13 to August 15. Ohigan are two days when we go to see our ancestors across the Sanzu River. One is the spring equinox and the other is the autumn equinox. When I was a little boy, I remember that my grandmother lighted a small fire in the garden at Obon. I heard that we light a fire in front of the house to welcome the spirits of our ancestors so that they don’t lose their way. We light a fire again to send them back home. Obon and Ohigan are both days to visit graves and thank our ancestors. We offer “botamochi” during the spring Ohigan, and we offer “ohagi” during the autumn Ohigan. Although they have different names, these are the same kind of “manju.”
