Readers’ Corner: Bicycles in the Snow
The other day Mr Jarrell wrote that he was lucky he didn’t have to ride a scooter on the snow or on the ice in Sapporo. That reminded me of something. We had never thought of riding a bicycle in winter here in Sapporo before. Then some cyclists started riding their bicycles in winter a few years ago. People were surprised at first. But soon they realized that the tires were studded so they wouldn’t slip. Now riding in winter is no longer unusual here. When we walk on the sidewalk, we have to look back to see if a bicycle is passing us every time we turn or change course, even in winter.
