A Very Unusual Christmas Custom
One of the most unusual Christmas customs I have ever heard about comes from Catalonia, the part of Spain where Barcelona is. In December, families buy a special log (piece of wood) that has a happy face painted on it with a red hat on top. Families keep the log in their house and “feed” it at night. Then, on Dec. 24, they cover the back of the log with a blanket, and the children hit the log with sticks and sing a song asking the log to poop (“unko suru”). The song says, “Don’t poop salty fish, poop turrons” (a special kind of sweet). The children go to another room and pray, When they come back, the blanket is lifted, and the children find their “pooped” presents.
