Words of the Year
The Japanese word of the year for 2022 is “Murakami-sama.” This year’s word comes from the name of the young Yakult baseball star who broke the record for the most home runs in a season by a Japanese player. It is a play on words. “Kami-sama” means “god,” and to many fans, Murakami seems like a baseball god. In Britain, Oxford University Press usually chooses the word of the year, but this year they asked people to vote. The winner was “goblin mode.” Since the pandemic, many people are in goblin mode. They don’t feel like doing anything. They are lazy. They don’t dress nicely. They don’t care about what other people think. They just do things for themselves.
